The everything river turns into a muddy shit river, and then it ’s sold back to us. Now, when you sense a germ, our impulse is to put it in the phone where it gets sucked into the river with titties, propaganda, stupid ads, and cat videos. It could grow and sprout in my brain’s private darkness. Now we ’re all swimming in huge rushing rivers of content that completely erode the barriers of art with a capital A and everything else.įS Before, I used to have an idea that would be like a germ in my mind. ML Let ’s talk about feeds and the circulation of mediated materials.įS When I was in grad school in the early ’ 90s, one of our great teachers, Patti Podesta, would say, “Art is going to be over because of America ’ s Funniest Home Videos.” This is before feeds, maybe twenty-five years too soon. Attention is the canvas that the music is painted on, and there ’s a structural necessity for the receiver as part of the mark-making. The audience ’s taut attention was required to feel the lines being drawn musically. I used to think about this with jazz and getting into Miles Davis. That ’s a metaphor about the physics of intelligence. It makes me think about control, and gravity, and getting to the point where the form takes the right shape. The puppetry thing is so beautiful in the Delany quote. But maybe what Huerta’s saying is that he’s a cryptic motherfucker, and I should read things closely. It reminds me of the process of reading poetry and trying to understand the meaning encrypted beneath the surface text.” This is like a student thinking that the meaning is locked in the back of the painting, and the painter can give the key to unlock it. In a letter Huerta sent me, he said: “One of the things that keeps me amused throughout the day is in the form of cryptograms that get published in Stars and Stripes. My life is such a huge part of the material of my work. A poet uses the most basic tools and elements that everybody shares. Charles Ray was the first person to call me a poet, which is a more elegant way of understanding me as a conceptual artist. Huerta is a poet and an artist, and I consider my approach to art as a kind of poetry as well. Poetry figures large in the current show. He then picks up the strings, gives a pull, and lo-the pieces are pulled into form: poem.”įS Yes. Poetry is called ‘concentrated’ because editing the commentary, the poet tries to imply what was left out by the shape of the resulting hole. And yet the editing is done strictly with that in mind. What conceit to think that someone else might be interested in this commentary. Delany ’s journals that resonates so much with your work: “Edited forms of the constant commentary that I make upon my life constitute my art. Max Levin There ’s a passage from Samuel R. Svenonius ’ s “ Censorship Now” (2017) series for the 2017 Whitney Biennial, I began following on Instagram. I first encountered Stark ’s work in 2017 in the form of her animated, episodic tour-de-force video My Best Thing (2011). A horny bricoleur, she folds literary and musical modes into networked compositions inlaid with sexts and theory. Since the 1990s, Stark’s works across writing, drawing, painting, collage, and video are inquiries into desire and exchange that are also quiet ruminations on contact and translation. Huerta is an artist and reservist whose potential romance with Stark was blown off course by his sudden deployment. An informal project coordinator assisted a master printer, and an airbrush artist rendered a muscled, shirtless mirror selfie of “Private Huerta” on canvas. In May, Frances Stark texted me from her Los Angeles studio about how one “hot selfie has turned into an endless project involving all these different dudes.” A team had assembled to put the finishing touches on a group of large paintings.
